The University of Limerick is an education institution located along the scenic River Shannon in Limerick, Ireland. Founded in the year 1972, it is one-half of the first universities founded after the Independence of Ireland.

The University was at 501st place in the World University Rankings, held by Times Higher Education at the year 2020, and has been maintaining its position in the list since the past 2 years, the University of Limerick was awarded prestigious awards for graduate employability, innovation, and knowledge transfer, teaching, engagement, internationalization, and infrastructure by QS Stars independent assessors. The University has a campus area of 340 acres, due to which large geographical regions are dedicated to each aspect of the university. 

With close to 12,000 students, including more than 1400 international students enrolling for programs each year, the University of Limerick has a good track record in education and scholarship. A survey was conducted in Ireland of finding the most popular University, and the University of Limerick was voted as the most popular university with over 85% of the satisfaction rate. The University of Limerick offers more than 70 undergraduate programs across Humanities and Social Sciences, Business, Education and Health Sciences, Science and Engineering and several other related streams.

University of Limerick: History

A British administrator Called Robert Clive bought lands in Ireland, at Country Limerick and County Clare. He named the part of land near the Country Limerick as Plassey. Following the Irish Independence, these lands were declared as state property. After which construction of a college in 1970 took place at the land (Plassey), which later became the University of Limerick.

The University of Limerick was originally named as National Institute for Higher Education Limerick(NIHE Limerick) but in 1989, NIHE Limerick was established by legislation as the University of Limerick. Due to this, the University of Limerick along with Dublin City University became the first institutes since Irish independence to be given the title of a “university”.
