The University of Houston-Clear Lake is a public university in Pasadena and as well as in Houston, Texas. The university also has branch campuses in Pearland and Texas Medical Center. UHCL was founded back in the year 1971 and had an enrolment of nearly more than 9,000 students for fall 2018. 

UHCL serves its students in four different academic colleges. The university also offers 97-degree programs, 46 bachelor programs, 48 master programs, and three doctoral.

The Presidents

The office of the president of the university, held by Ira K. Blake, was created with the establishment of the university back in the year 1971 as the chief executive officer of the institution.

Organization

UHCL is one of the four separate and distinct institutions in the University of Houston System. The institution is separately accredited and offers its academic programs and confers its degrees. UHCL also has its administration. It is a stand-alone university: it is not a branch campus of the University of Houston. The University of Houston-Clear Lake and UH (University of Houston) are both component institutions of the University of Houston System, and they are separate degree-granting universities.

The organization and control of the University of Houston- Clear Lake, is vested in the Board of Regents of the University of Houston System. The Board is said to have all the rights, powers, and duties that it has concerning the organization and the control of other institutions in the system. However, UHCL is maintained as a separate and distinct institution.

The president is the CEO of the University of Houston Clear Lake. He reports to the chancellor of the University of Houston System. The chancellor appoints the president and is confirmed by the Board of Regents of the University of Houston System. The current president of the university is Ira K. Blake. 

Campus/Campuses

The main campus of the university is located on a 524-acre nature habitat adjacent to the Houston community of Clear Lake. And most of the campuses lie within the corporate limits of Pasadena, while only the part of campus south of Horsepen Bayou lies within the city of Houston. 

The Houston Clear Lake campus consists of six classroom buildings: Bayou Building, Arbor Building, Delta Building, Student Services, and Classroom Building. Two new facilities have been opened since the fall of 2018. 

The Bayou Building also houses Patio Cafe, the campus book store, and the 500 seat Bayou Theater, which was renovated back in 2018. The Alfred R. Neumann Library is also in this building. It is an 80,000 square foot space containing over 480,000 volumes and over 1,000 journals and any items from the academic or public library in Texas.  

The UH-Clear Lake Pearland Campus

UHCL has a branch campus situated on 40 acres of land in Pearland. The campus includes a library and a student lounge in addition to the classroom and the laboratory space. The Health Sciences and Classroom Building has been added and is scheduled to open in spring 2019, featuring simulation labs to support UHCL’s Registered Nurse Bachelor of Science degree program. 

Academics

The UHCL offers its programs and confers its degrees. Those students who graduate from the university will have diplomas under the name the University of Houston- Clear Lake. The university has four academic colleges: The College of Business, the College of Education, the College of Human Sciences and Humanities, and the College of Science and Engineering. The Business College has the largest undergraduate enrolment and awards the most bachelor’s degrees annually. 

The university awards UG degrees Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, BBA(Bachelor of Business Administration), and Bachelor of Social Work(BSW). It also offers graduate-level degrees Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Business Administration, Master of Healthcare Administration, and Doctor of Education. 

Many of the academic programs have individual accreditation through other governing bodies such as the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the American Chemical Society, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
