Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya is a group of schools for talented students predominantly from rural areas. It was established in 1986 i.e., 34 years ago. it is based in India which is managed by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, New Delhi, an autonomous organization under the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are co-educational schools. They are affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi. They provide classes sixth to twelfth. They are residential and they aim to find talented children in rural areas of India and provide them with the best quality education, regardless of their financial condition and social background.
It is located in every state of India except Tamil Nadu. Its chairman is Mr. Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, ministry of education. The total number of students enrolled in this public institution as of March 2019 is 265547. There are approximately 634 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas with campus size 30 acres of each school. The Uniform is off white and navy blue color. This institution does not charge any fees from its students during the stay of 7 years.
The thought of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas came in the mind of former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi, with the vision of opening JNV in every district of India. It then became a part of the National Education Policy, 1986 to provide quality education with social justice. For smooth working, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) was registered as a society which is now managing the JNVs.

Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Education, Department of School Education and Literacy. The Chairman of the Samiti is the Hon’ble Minister of Education, Mr. Ramesh Pokhriyal. JNVST Result for phase 1 has been declared and the phase 2 exam dates are yet to be announced. In Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST) 2020, total of 2777504 students have registered for JNVST 2020 out of which 1994662 students appeared and 46400 have got selected. The selection ratio is 2-3% (more or less depending upon the number of candidates).
Apart from JNVST, 98.66% of students passed in class X CBSE examination.
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya admit card
The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti functions through the Executive Committee under the Chairman. The Executive Committee is responsible for the management of all affairs including funds allocation. It has the authority to exercise all powers of Samiti. Admission in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya
The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti has eight regional offices for the Navodaya Vidyalayas which are headed by commissioners. JNVs are mainly based on rural students. At least 75% of seats in JNVs are reserved for rural students and the rest are for urban students. There are reservations for girl students as well as for the disabled. Following are the eligibility conditions:
- Only candidates from the district where the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya are located are eligible to apply for admission.
- Candidates appearing for the selection test must be in Class-V for the entire academic session in a Government or Government-Aided, other recognized school, or ‘B’ Certificate Competency Course of National Institute of Open Schooling, in the same district.
- The candidate must be within the age group of 9 to 13 years. This applies to candidates of all categories, including those who belong to the Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs).
- The candidate claiming admission from rural quota must have studied and passed Classes- III, IV, and V from a Govt./Govt. Aided/recognized school spending one full academic session each year in a school located in a rural area.
- A candidate who has studied in a school located in an urban area even for a single day of a session in any of the Classes-III, IV or V, will be considered as an Urban area candidate.
- A candidate who has not been promoted and admitted to Class-V before 30th September is not eligible to apply.
- No candidate is eligible to appear in the JNV Selection Test for a second time, under any circumstances.
How to apply Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya online
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas offer no other mode of application form except online mode. There are mainly two steps in the online application process, registration, and submission of personal details. To apply online proceed as follows:
- Step1 – Visit https://navodaya.gov.in/
- Step2 – On the home screen, click on ‘Link for class VI JNVST 2021 Registration’ under ‘Admissions in JNVs’.
- Step3 – It will redirect you to a new webpage.
- Step4 – Fill in user id and create a password. Those who have not registered before click on the link ‘click here for registration phase -I’.
- Step5 – Fill the required details and upload the scanned copy of the candidate’s photo and signature, parent’s signature, and class V certificate.

Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Education, Department of School Education and Literacy. - How many subjects are there in JNVST?
Ans: JNVST is conducted in 20 medium/ Languages namely Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, English, Gujarati, Garo, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Mizo, Nepali, Odiya, Punjabi, Manipuri(meiteimayek and Bengali script), Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Malayalam and Khasi. Mental ability, arithmetic, and language are the subjects in JNVST. - Which is the difference between JNV and KV?
Ans: Both JNV and KV are central government schools, so there is not much difference between the two except the fact that JNVs are mainly for rural children and it is fully residential.
- Why are there no JNV in Tamilnadu?
Ans: Despite more than 600 JNVs across the country, Tamilnadu does have any JNV because of the observation that disproportionate importance is given to Hindi in these schools. - Is there any negative marking in JNVST?
Ans: No, there is no negative marking in Jawahar Navoday Vidyalaya selection test. The test is of 100 marks. However, to get admission into JNV, the candidate must pass the cut-off.
