Free University of Berlin

The Free University of Berlin is a public university which was established on 4th December 1948. It was established through the joint efforts of students and scholars. As the name suggests, the free university of Berlin is free for most of the courses except a few courses in the masters and bachelor’s programmes. It has an enrollment of over 33000 students for the undergraduate courses.  It offers a huge range of graduate degrees, masters degrees and doctoral degrees. It is a well renowned research institution. 

Campus

The University conducts study programs across 4 campuses:

Dahlem Campus

It has many departments where courses from various disciplines like humanities, social sciences, business, law economics and so on are offered. It also houses a 106-acre wide botanical garden and is home to the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American studies.

The Lankwitz Campus

It comprises of the Institute of Geological Sciences and the Institute of Geographical Sciences. It is also home to the Institute of Meteorology and Space Sciences located in Steglitz. The Campus also houses the university archives.

Duppel Campus

The Duppel Campus is home to subsidiary divisions of Veterinary Medicine Department.

The Benjamin Franklin Campus

The Benjamin Franklin campus is situated in southern Berlin in the district of Steglitz. It was formed by the merger of the Humboldt University of Berlin and the Free University of Berlin.

Programs

The University of Berlin offers over 190 courses from different disciplines. These include accounting and finance, humanities and social sciences, education and teaching, mass communication and media, education and teaching, applied and pure sciences, computer science and IT programmes.

How to Apply

In case you are looking to apply to Free University of Berlin, you must submit your admission application through an online portal.

You can apply through:

  • Freie Universität Berlin
  • Uni-Assist
  • Hochschulstart

However, if you have a foreign degree (country other than Germany), you can only apply though Uni-Assist.

The process is simple:

  • Register to create a student account to manage your application.
  • Find relevant courses offered.
  • Submit applications to the university.
  • Submit documents by uploading them on the portal.
  • Keep track of your application.

For Bachelors

• You need to have more than 65% in 12th according to Indian grading system. 

• You need B1 German language certification from Goethe-Institut

• You need to appear for the ‘aufnahmeprufung’ which will be conducted in Germany itself.

• You also need DSH1 and DSH2

DSH exam is it is language proficiency test and it is an entry ticket to the German universities. DSH includes a written and oral examination and it is ranged from DSH1 TO DSH 3, DSH 3 being the highest score.

For Masters

 these are some basic requirements

• You at least need more than 65% in your bachelor’s degree

(your score will be converted according to German grading system based on what were the passing marks in your college)

• You need a minimum requirement of 6.5 or 6.0 score in IELTS exam.

Besides these, there is a 15% reservation for non-European people in the universities.

The notable alumni of the University include five Nobel Prize winners and 15 winners of the national Leibniz Prize. The alumni also include famous physicists, film directors, writers, politicians, etc. The University is associated with many notable international organizations and institutes. It also has tie-ups with reputed firms which provide students with excellent job opportunities.
