Set up as the first technical institution in Ireland in 1887 Dublin Institute of Technology or DIT, was also a major third-level institution situated in Dublin.
Though on January 1, 2019, the Dublin Institute of Technology was disbanded, and its operations were passed on to the Technological University Dublin.
Historically it was an institute that went through several legal and governance models, and it reached its pinnacle when DIT was granted autonomous status in 1992.
