The increasing demand for studying abroad led to a rising number of students who opted for the PET examination. Candidates with a dream of pursuing their studies in foreign universities for better education and employment must take the PTE exam to check their proficiency in the English language.

The UK, Canada, Australia, the USA, New Zealand, Germany, Ireland, and Singapore all recognise the Pearson Language Test (PTE).

This exam will help you get hassle-free admission to foreign colleges and universities. But, beginners often find help understanding the entire registration process and other related details before they take the exam.

If you are one of them and want to take the PTE exam and become qualified, you probably want to know how to sign up for this test. We have provided you with all the information you require in this blog.

The Pearson Test of English, or PET exam, is available in three formats: academic, general, and young learner. When you wish to pursue higher education at an international university with a solid reputation, you take the PTE Academic exam.

It’s possible to take the PTE General exam to apply for a job or immigration purposes if you wish to start a new life abroad. Children between 12 and 16 take the PTE Young Learner exam. The exam will be taken with the intention of continuing their education wherever their parents are relocating.

Let’s see the eligibility criteria for the PTE General and Academic exams.

1. Candidate’s Nationality

The PTE Academic exam is open to students from many countries but is subject to the same rules. However, according to the PTE website, applicants can only take the test if they have a valid, current, and legible identification document (often a passport).

2. Candidate’s Educational Background

There are no educational eligibility criteria for the PTE test. To take the exam, the only condition is that you must speak and write English fluently.

3. Age of the Candidate

The age limit for the PTE examination is above 16 years. Therefore, you must be at least 16 years old to take this exam. However, their official website does not provide enough information regarding the upper age limit. However, candidates aged 16 to 18 must submit a guardian consent form, which you will find on the official website of PTE.

Generally, PTE in India accepts the passport as a primary form of identification. A passport is required for Indian students, regardless of their chosen centre, both outside and inside India.

Test takers must enter adequate passport information when registering for the PTE examination. The candidates must submit their original ID document on exam day at the test centre. Otherwise, the applicant will not be allowed in the exam hall.

The applicant must present a cancelled passport stamp on the original passport and the renewal receipt for a passport showing the renewal submission if the passport has been given to the management for renewal. It is a prerequisite, particularly if you wish to reserve a PTE test date.

For their identity documentation, applicants must pay particular attention to the following standards:

  • PTE does not accept ID photocopies for document validation.
  • The document’s issuing date cannot be more than ten years.
  • It is required to bring the same ID to the test Centre, which they provided during the scheduling PTE test.
  • Candidates must submit a document matching the information given while scheduling a test.
  • If the candidate does not bring the appropriate ID to the testing location in the original form, they will not be allowed to take the exam.

A Quick Overview of the Question Pattern – Take A Note

It is challenging to prepare for the text without knowing the time and mark ratio. Therefore, let us present an overview of the test to clear your doubts.

1. The Section on Reading

Candidates’ understanding of instructions written in the English language is tested in this section. The reading section has five parts of between 150 and 300 words each. In addition, there will be some multiple-choice questions, fill-in-the-blanks, and paragraph re-arrange. This segment of the PTE test gives you 32 to 41 minutes to complete the questions.

2. The Segment for Listening

You can listen to previously recorded audio files to help you remember the material presented. After that, you must appropriately respond to all the questions. Also, the test’s listening portion generally lasts 45 to 57 minutes.

It is divided into 8 parts, each with a specific period. The components include writing from dictation, playing the audio files, highlighting and correcting summaries, summarising the spoken text, filling in the gaps, picking and removing the missing words, highlighting wrong terms, and multiple-choice questions with single and multiple responses.

3. Sections on Speaking and Writing

The writing and speaking components are merged. Each section has six short subsections with a set amount of time. This section will test your ability to speak and write English fluently. You have 77 to 93 minutes to complete the questions in these combined portions. The subsections are your introduction, describing pictures, reading aloud, repeating words, relaying a lecture, responding to brief questions, summarising written text, and composing an essay.

Also, five A4 size sheets will be provided for taking notes during the examination. If you need another booklet, just ask for it. But until the test starts, you are not allowed to take notes.

1. Target a Score

Understanding your English language proficiency will be a great starting point for getting the desired score in the main exam. However, the primary thing that you need to do is to concentrate more on the topics where you need improvement.

2. Understand the Test Format

You must take enough time to familiarise yourself with the test pattern and format. It will help you make better preparations and get a better result. You can ask several questions to yourself, like how many questions you need to complete within a specific time, what tasks you need to finish first, etc.

3. Select the Right Preparation Resources

Another crucial thing that you need to keep in mind is that you have to find the right resources for your preparation. Consider reading relevant books to prepare and familiarise yourself with every topic to score well.
