KSOU abbreviation for Karnataka State Open University is a university that was established in the year 1996 and is given place as one of the leading open Universities for learning in the country. KSOU offers a number of Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs in the stream of Science, Commerce, IT, Management, Arts, Library Sciences and many more. Though admission to all the courses are usually merit-based however, preference is always given to applicants with required experience in their respective fields.

The university in total has 13 departments managed by at least 57 faculty members. It offers programmes for students to lowest degrees from the graduate level to the doctoral level and offers a number of diploma and certificate programmes.

Karnataka State Open University is located on the Mysore-Mangalore highway in approximately 36 acres, in the Manasagangotri campus of the University of Mysore. The root of Karnataka state open universities lies in the Institute of a correspondence course and continuing education, a separate wing of the University of Mysore. The university actually progressed from the Institute of Correspondence Course and Continuing Education of the University located in Mysore.

Commonwealth Learning is an intergovernmental organization formed by Commonwealth Heads of Government to motivate the development and sharing of open learning/knowledge, resources distance education and technologies.

Karnataka State Open University Affiliations

Earlier in the day, UGC de-recognized numerous courses of KSOU with effect starting from the year 2012-13. The university was recognized again in the year 2015 after it was found violating the norms of UGC and DEC, IGNOU. The university has violated the rules regulations related to territorial jurisdiction by starting up study centers across India and also provided admission to courses within India and abroad in violation of the rules and regulations. Even after a notice was issued, the university continued this practice.

Lives of thousands of students were jeopardized by the de-recognition leading to the numerous protests by students and petitions to the Karnataka High Court and Supreme Court in 2018. After several initiatives that were taken by KSOU, the Government of Karnataka and the high court, 17 courses of KSOU were granted recognition from 2018 onwards again. However, careers of earlier students remained in the limbo without degrees, though a bridge course and a test are more likely to be conducted as suggested by the university.
