Eligibility & Entry Requirements
Academic
Applicant must have a first degree, postgraduate diploma or professional qualification recognised as equivalent to an undergraduate UK honours degree of at least a 2:2. Other qualifications or experience may be considered.Advanced standing
If you’ve completed a PGCE within the last five years, you can normally join the course with advanced standing. This means you’ll put 60 credits from your PGCE towards your masters and complete less units to achieve your MA. Usually, this means you’ll complete just two core units before progressing to your dissertation.
With the agreement of your programme leader, other relevant and recent level seven qualifications may also permit advanced standing.
If you do not have a recent level seven qualification, you may be eligible to claim for recognition of prior experiential learning (e.g. relevant work experience). Further advice and guidance on this will be available after you enrol.

What English and degree requirements apply to master's courses at Manchester Metropolitan University?
For most taught master's courses (MA, MSc) you need IELTS 6.5 overall with no component below 5.5, or an accepted equivalent such as TOEFL or PTE. Some programmes ask for more, for example IELTS 7.0 for the MA Social Work and MA Multimedia Journalism. The degree requirement is set course by course (for example, the LLM International Corporate Law lists a lower second-class UK honours degree or equivalent), so check the Entry requirements section of your course page. If you need a UK Student visa, the test must be IELTS for UKVI. mmu.ac.uk
Is there a scholarship for international master's students at Manchester Metropolitan University?
Yes. The International Postgraduate Scholarship is a tuition fee scholarship of GBP 5,000 in the first year for most eligible taught master's courses starting in September 2026, and GBP 3,000 for a few programmes (such as the MBA and some architecture courses) and for selected January 2027 starts. You do not apply separately: eligibility is assessed when you apply, and it is for self-funded students who pay overseas fees. It is paid in proportion to the tuition fees charged, and the university reviews amounts each year, so confirm the figure on your offer. mmu.ac.uk
How does an international student apply to Manchester Metropolitan University?
Start from your course page and use the 'How to apply' button; most courses can be applied for online, or through an education agent or partner. Have your transcripts and certificates, personal statement and English language evidence ready (art and design courses usually also ask for a portfolio link). Master's applications are open year-round, but most courses close in mid to late August; the main intake is September, with a small number of courses starting in January or February. After an offer, you pay a GBP 5,000 tuition fee deposit (or provide sponsorship evidence) to request your CAS, then apply for your Student visa. mmu.ac.uk
