Test is a computer adaptive test that assesses certain analytical, writing, quantitative and verbal skills,in standard written English and solely on computer. It is used in admissions decisions by more than 6500 graduate management programs like Mba, MIM, Master of Finance etc worldwide.
The GMAT exam is a computer adaptive test, means that the candidate be presented with one question at a time and depending upon your previous answer, the difficulty level of the next question will be ascertained. It is not a test of business knowledge, subject matter mastery, English vocabulary, or advanced computational skills but tests your High order Reasoning skills that involve complex judgements, critical thinking, analysis and problem solving.The GMAT is comprised of 4 sections - Verbal , Quantitative, Integrated Reasoning and Analytical Writing Assessment. Duration of Exam is 3.5 hours and Maximum score is 800.However the number of test takers vary each year but it is approximately 2,50,000. The GMAT can be given once every 16 calendar days and no more than five times in a a year. The maximum attempts for lifetime is 8.

In 1953, the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) began as an association of nine business schools, whose goal was to develop a standardized test to help business schools select qualified applicants. GMAC has its base in Reston, Virginia, and has regional offices in London, New Delhi and Hong Kong

Format of the Exam
Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)
has four separately timed sections
. Analytical Writing Assesment and Integrated reasoning sections consists of an analytical writing and logical task; the remaining two sections (Quantitative and Verbal)
consist of multiple-choice questions delivered in a computer-adaptive format. Quantitative and Verbal can be scored between 200 and 800.

This section consists of 30 minute writing task : Analysis of an argument. The AWA measures your ability to think critically, communicate your ideas and formulate an appropriate and constructive critique. You have to type your essay on computer keyboard.
The Integrated-Reasoning Section
The integrated reasoning section highlights the relevant skills that business managers in today’s data-driven world need in order to analyse sophisticated streams of data and solve complex problem. It measures your ability to understand and evaluate multiple sources and types of information - Graphic, numeric and verbal - as they relate to another; used both quantitative and verbal reasoning to solve complex problems; and solve multiple problem in relation to one another.
Four types of questions are used in the Integrated Reasoning Section-

Integrated Reasoning questions may be quantitative verbal or a combination of both. You will have to interpret graphics and sort tables to extract meaning from information, but advanced statistical knowledge and spreadsheet manipulation skills are not necessary . You will have access to an on screen calculator with basic functions for the integrated reasoning section, but the calculator is not there in quantitative section
The Quantitative Section (75 minutes, 37 questions)
The Gmat quantitative section measures your ability to reason quantitatively, solve quantitative problems and interpret Graphic Data.
Problem Solving (23-24 questions):
These questions require you to work to a solution.
Data Sufficiency (13-14 questions):
These type of questions consist of a question followed by two statements (labeled 1 and 2). Your work is to determine whether the information provided in the two statements suffices to answer the question.
The Verbal Section (75 minutes, 41 questions)
This section measures your ability to read and comprehend written material and to reason and evaluate arguments.
Sentence Correction (14-15 questions)
These questions are designed to gauge you command of the English language and the conventions of standard written English,construction, including grammar, syntax and diction, — but not punctuation. Your task is to determine which among five versions of a sentence is the best example of proper grammar and effective expression.
Critical Reasoning (14-15 questions)
These questions are designed to test your ability to understand, critique, and draw reasonable conclusions from arguments.
Reading Comprehension (12-14 questions)
These questions are designed to measure your ability to read carefully and accurately, to determine the relationships among the various parts of a reading passage, and to draw inferences from the information in the passage. The questions are given in sets of 3-4, each set based on the same 150 to 350-word passage of text.
What is GMAT ?

What is the cost/registration fee for the GMAT?
The registration fee/cost for taking GMAT is USD 250. After the test, the test takers are asked to submit the names of 5 B-Schools where they would like to send their scores to. This facility is a part of the USD 250 fee that is charged for the test.
What is the scoring pattern?
Analytical Writing Section section grades are from 0-6 in 0.5 increments. Integrated Reasoning section is scored on a scale of 1-8 . Quantitative score are from 0 to 60. However preferred score is between 51 and 98 percentile Verbal score are from 0 to 60 . However, score above 45 is 99 percentile on verbal whereas Total Score of Quantitative and verbal section are from 200-800 in 10 point increments.
How often can I take the GMAT exam?
You can take the GMAT once every 16 calendar days and no more than five times in a year or say a 12-month period. You are only allowed to take the exam 8 times in the lifetime.
How soon do I get my score?
You will get your scores for the maths, verbal and Integrated Reasoning sections the moment you finish the exam. However, official scores (with scores for the Analytical Writing section) will take 20 days to reach you.
What happens if I cancel my exam date?
If you cancel more than 7 days before the test date, you will get a refund of USD 80. If you cancel within 7 days of the test date, you will not get any refund amount, So, it is better to reschedule than to cancel the exam.
What happens if I want to cancel the GMAT test score & when can I reinstate the score?
Score can be cancelled either immediately after the GMAT exam attempt or within 72 hours of the exam. If score is cancelled immediately after the exam at the test center, then there is no cancellation fee for it. If score is cancelled after the exam within 72 hours, there is a cancellation cost of $25.Cancelled scores can be reinstated within 4 years and 11 months of the exam And, the reinstatement cost is $50.
How do I send my score to the colleges I want to apply to?
The universities only accept official scores sent directly by GMAC. Scores to five B-schools can be sent free of cost while taking the exam. Subsequently, for each score report sent to a college, you would have to pay a fee of USD 28.
What does the GMAT percentile mean?
If you secure 85 percentile in your exam it would mean 85 % of the students taking the exam in the past three years are below you and 15% are equal to or above you.
How can I prepare to take the GMAT exam?
You should prepare until you are comfortable with the test question formats and the timings. It is important that you understand what types of items to expect and how to pace yourself. with it. Preparation time is individual but may take seven weeks or more than that.
What if I'm a test taker under the age of 18?

Am I allowed to use a calculator during my exam?
You are not allowed to bring your calculator for the exam. A calculator will be provided for use during the Integrated Reasoning section. Calculators are not allowed during the Quantitative section. You will be provided with note boards and markers to do calculations on the Quantitative section. In addition, no other personal items are allowed in the exam room. You will be provided with a locker for your personal items.
What if I need my cellular (mobile) phone at the test center?
You may not bring your cellular (mobile) phone into the testing room, nor may you check or use your phone during breaks and any other time. You may store your phone in a locker during your test, but the test administrator is not responsible for lost or stolen stuff. If you do use your cell phone at any time during your exam time, your exam will be cancelled and your exam fee will be forfeited.
What if I need more break time than I am given?
Breaks are specified, and any extra time taken will be deducted from the time you are given to complete the next section. Testing accommodations are available for test takers who meet certain eligibility criteria and properly document their request for it.
What if I need an unscheduled break?
If there is an emergency case, raise your hand to get the administrator’s attention. The administrator will set your workstation to break mode, and you may leave the testing room soon. Remember, The exam timer will NOT stop during your unscheduled break.
What is considered as a good exam score ?
A 700 or above is considered as a good score on the GMAT. As of now, that score would put you in the 89th percentile of all test takers, according to the people who run the test. Being in the top ~10% on any exam is great.
How early do I need to arrive for GMAT?
You must arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled GMAT exam. When you arrive at the test center, Please do check in. If you arrive more than 15 minutes after your scheduled exam time, you may not be admitted, you may lose your test fee and will not be allowed to give the exam.
How do i select my preferred section order for my GMAT exam?
You have to select the section order at the test center. The Select Section Order screen will be presented on the computer screen after you select the schools to send your score report, after the navigation tutorial, and immediately prior to beginning your GMAT exam.
You will be presented with the three section order options below and you will have two minutes to make a selection out of it. If you do not make a selection within two minutes, the original order will be selected as a default i.e Analytical Writing Assessment, integrated Reasoning , Quantitative, Verbal

What if a person do not want to take the optional breaks ?
Remember that the breaks are optional, if you don’t want to take your break, you can skip through it and continue to the next section of GMAT. If you exceed the time limit of your break, the time will be deducted from the next section of your exam.
Can i skip any of the sections?
No, you must complete every section of the GMAT exam and you cannot skip through any sections. A section is considered complete either you answer every question, or you run out of time for that section.
Which section order should I select?
There is no “correct” or “recommended” section order to select. You can take the GMAT exam based on your strengths and testing preferences.
If you are not sure, just take the exam in the original section order.

ESR (Enhanced Score Report) is available for canceled scores also. So, if a student is unhappy with his score, he can cancel it, order the ESR, assess where he did not do well and prepare for his next attempt accordingly.

Can schools see your Cancelled GMAT scores?
To ensure that test takers have an accurate record of their GMAT exam history, youwill still see all your GMAT exams on your record, including cancelled scores. However, cancelled scores will not be displayed on the version of score reports sent to schools.
Is GMAT score accepted in IIM ?
The Indian School of Business (ISB) is the only Indian B-School that accepts candidates based on GMAT score for Indians residing in India
How much do GMAT scores influence admission decisions?
The GMAT score does matter a lot, and it is a threshold. The admissions officers want to ensure that they do not admit someone who cannot keep up with the rest of the class, and your high GMAT score reassures them that you can perform academically. In fact, for those of you with a relatively low GPA, a high GMAT score can help you compensate (somewhat) for your under-performance as an undergrad.
However, while a low GMAT score may be a red flag to the MBA admissions committee, do not make the mistake of believing that a high GMAT score is the golden ticket to admission. Carefully prepare your entire business school application.
How long does it take to prepare for GMAT ?
While the answer may certainly be “it depends” or “2 weeks / 2 months / 2 years” etc. we can see that 44% of the test takers spend at least 51 hours preparing, 65% start preparing at least 4 weeks in advance, and those who do better on the GMAT tend to spend more time preparing. However, it varies on person to person
