When we hear the word pharmacy, the first image that comes to mind is a drug store selling medicines. Pharmacy is far bigger than that. It is a science-driven field built on research, innovation and patient care, and it offers a genuine, long-term career for students who enjoy chemistry, biology and problem solving.
Most pharmacy degrees combine academic study with vocational and professional training, including legal and ethical aspects of dispensing and direct interaction with patients. This guide covers the courses available in India, the entrance exams for 2026 admission, and the top pharmacy institutions in India and abroad.
What Is Pharmacy and What Does a Pharmacist Do?
Pharmacy is the science of preparing, dispensing and reviewing medicines and advising patients on their safe use. A pharmacist does far more than sell drugs: they check prescriptions, counsel patients, monitor drug interactions, and support research into new treatments. The field blends chemistry, physiology and pharmacology, making it a broad, science-driven career.
A pharmacist is the professional who has gained mastery over the field of pharmacy. Beyond dispensing medicines, they track the drugs supplied, liaise with doctors and prescribers, and ensure patients understand dosage and side effects. A pharmacy curriculum draws on chemistry, physiology, pharmacology and pharmaceutics, so it suits students who want a rigorous science education with clear professional outcomes.
