What Is an IELTS TRF?
TRF stands for Test Report Form, the official IELTS score certificate. It records your band scores for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, your overall band, your personal details and a unique TRF number. Universities, employers and immigration authorities accept it as the only valid proof of an IELTS result.
Think of the TRF as the mark sheet for your IELTS test. It is issued once for each test you sit, and every recognising organisation you apply to will ask for it. Because scores can be checked against the official IELTS database, no screenshot or informal score printout is a substitute for the form itself.
Note that the TRF number and the IELTS candidate or reference number you used at registration are two different things. Application forms usually ask specifically for the TRF number, which is printed in the bottom right-hand corner of the form.

How Do You Get Your IELTS Test Report Form?
You do not apply for a TRF separately. Once marking is complete your test centre releases it with your results, and you are emailed a link to the Test Taker Portal. Computer-delivered candidates download an electronic TRF themselves, while paper-based candidates collected or were posted a printed form.

From mid-2026 IELTS stops offering a paper-based test and every test is delivered on computer, although exact timelines vary by market. In selected markets a Writing on Paper option lets you handwrite the Writing answers while the rest of the test stays on computer. Always give the number exactly as printed, without adding spaces or dashes of your own.

Organisations that accept IELTS can register for the free online results service. Staff look up a result using the Test Report Form number, then compare the scores and identity details on screen with the document a candidate has supplied. Results can also be downloaded in bulk or imported automatically through an interface.
The service exists to stop forged score reports being used for admission or visa applications. Access is restricted to recognising organisations, so candidates and agents cannot browse the database, and no broad searches are possible. Only the specific record matching a TRF number is returned.
For applicants, the practical effect is simple. Send your scores to a university that is registered with the verification service and it can confirm them electronically, which is usually faster than waiting for a posted paper copy to arrive.
Can You Request an Additional TRF?
Yes. Additional Test Report Forms can be sent to universities, government agencies, professional bodies and employers within two years of your test. Electronic copies are normally free, and centres such as Liverpool issue the first five paper copies at no charge before a per-copy fee and courier costs apply.

Some institutions set a shorter internal limit, so check the English language requirements of every course you apply to rather than assuming the full two years will be accepted. Plan your test date around your intake so the form is still current when the offer is made.
