An acceptance letter from a designated learning institution is required to apply for a study permit. A designated learning institution is a school that has been approved by the government of a province or territory to accept overseas students. In Canada, all elementary and secondary schools are designated learning institutions.

What is the DLI number in Canada?
The DLI number is a collection of numbers that have been allocated to all of the colleges and universities on the DLI Canada list. It is distributed to post-secondary institutions once IRCC obtains confirmation from the provincial or territorial ministry of education of their designation status. The external phrase for Organization ID in GCMS is “DLI number.” Once IRCC gets confirmation of a post-secondary institution’s designated status from its provincial or territory minister of education, this number is assigned.
How to change the DLI number in Canada?
You can modify your DLI as long as you’re still following the requirements of your study permit.
Following are the steps to change the DLI number in Canada:
- Sign in to your account my CIC account and login into your account.
- Click Transfer from DLI number in the section Designated Learning Institution Student Transfer.
- Click Search for my application after entering your study permit application number.
- Fill up the blanks with additional information regarding your original study permit application.
- Fill in your new DLI number, your new Student ID number, and your new school’s start date. Submit the transfer by clicking Submit.
- Examine the specifics of your transfer. Click Confirm Transfer if all of the information is correct.
- When your transfer is complete, you should receive an email notification. This verifies that you have informed the Canadian government of your plans to change DLIs.
