It is one of the prime postgraduate medical centers located in Chennai with 425 seats. The main objective behind MMC’s establishment was to treat soldiers of the British East India Company.
Currently, the Authority with the help of the Tamil Nadu Government is restoring a part of the college, post-restoration it will be turned into a Museum to preserve Madras Medical College’s history. It is a public medical college affiliated to the University of Madras since 1857. Two notable institutions under MMC are Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and Tamil Nadu Government Dental College.
Some of the most notable alumni are M. Ahmed Ansari, President of INC, and Muthulakhshmi Reddi, one of the first female doctors. Madras Medical College, with a ranking of 15, is one of the top-ranked medical colleges in the country right now, and it has done spreading its branches to the world of pharmacy with a ranking of 22 in India.
Courses Offered
Madras Medical College offers a total of 61 courses such as MBBS, B. Pharm, and B.Sc Nursing as a division of the Undergraduate Program and MD, M. Pharm, and M.Sc Nursing as a division of the Postgraduate program. The institution has a sector for diploma in paramedical alongside the UG and PG program. Meanwhile, courses on pathology, radiotherapy, audiology, and radio diagnosis are some new additions on modifying the course history and alluring aspirants.
Admission Procedure
The only process to get into Madras Medical College is through NEET (National Eligibility Entrance Test). For MBBS, the college has reserved 85% of the seats for local candidates, whereas, 15% is open for all India. Generally, the closing rank for MMC deviates between 2.8K to 3K. So, if you are a local aspirant, the chances of admission intensify. In the case of General or Unreserved candidates, a minimum of 50% aggregate in NEET is a must to become eligible for the MBBS programs of Madras Medical College. However, for PwD candidates, a minimum of 45% aggregate is a must.
According to the rules of the state quota, 85% of the seats are offered on the basis of merit in 10+2 (Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, and Biology) reduced to 200 marks. The remaining procedure depends on the window of counseling, and Madras Medical College has always been a famous choice among toppers.
For Postgraduation, as per the rules of the Directorate of Medical Education, 50% of the seats are reserved for the State. Out of this percentage, 25% is allotted to the service candidates, and the remaining 25% is open for competition. Only 3% of the total state quota is reserved for Physically Disabled Candidates.

In the case of DM and M. Ch, Madras Medical College offers admission on the basis of entrance test conducted by the Directorate of Medical Education, Chennai. The cutoff of the mentioned courses is published on September 30th every year. Final admission takes place on the basis of merit and experience. The minimum eligibility criteria for applying is a degree in MD or MS with 50% from a university recognized by the Medical Council of India.
