The Guardian is a UK universities rankings system that uses 9 distinct criteria, each of which is weighted from 5 to 15%. These criteria don’t include a measurement of research productivity, unlike other yearly rankings of the UK institutions.

Are University Rankings Reliable?

Rankings are very subjective, lacking in objective & measurable characteristics, and hence are not necessarily reliable indications for comparing universities across the board. Aside from that, every system favors one factor over the other.

Times Higher Ed has been chastised for focusing too much on citations in its rankings, while the QS system has been chastised for adding too much weight to reputational studies. This makes it more difficult for colleges where English is not the major language.

Certainly, rankings aren’t entirely arbitrary; they take into account a variety of variables, and while numerous regional lists have become increasingly popular in recent years, World Rankings remain the ultimate standard. Should students, guardians, and employers disregard UK universities rankings altogether? No, but it’s important to remember that they’re only one piece of the puzzle.
