Master of Engineering Management

It is a commonly found around the world that many engineering graduates opted for MBA after graduation. By doing MBA, students get opportunities to try fields like marketing, finance, human resource etc. But, it was unfortunate that many of those engineers did not have to use their technical expertise much in their work after doing MBA. Master of Engineering Management or MEM course offers a solution to those who want to pursue a course with the combination of technical and business expertise. MEM offers an excellent course for those who want to make their career in management of engineering sector.

This course has been designed with industry demand for managers with an understanding of engineering.

Everything you need to know before choosing!

What you can expect from the course?

While doing MEM course, you will have to attend lectures, do case studies, attend hands-on workshops, attend practical classes, do group and individual project work. Also, courses will be having Engineering Design Activities (EDAs) and consultation sessions with leading industry practitioners. During the course, you will be using applications in 3D modelling, quality assessment, project management, inventory management and simulation processes.

Many institutions offer students facility to do live engineering or business research projects. These projects are helpful in applying student’s degree knowledge to practical use and also, students can see how their knowledge can be applied. By doing the course, students develop knowledge and expertise, industrial engineering skills,   management techniques and strategies. While doing the course, depending on the college in which you are doing, you will be able to undertake research or take part in a salaried industrial placement for one year.

Entry Criteria:

For doing MEM, as it is a specialized management course, applicants are required to have

  1.  Bachelor’s degree in engineering, or computer science or mathematics or science.
  2.  Some institutions do offer engineering management at undergraduate level also.
  3.  For these courses, it will be like the branch of engineering with management.
  4. Some colleges also offer Business administration major with engineering management option.
  5. You are not required to have work experience before applying for MEM abroad.
  6. But it will be always a bonus if you good years of experience in technical field.
  7.  Regarding aptitude test to be taken by international students, for MEM, you may either use GRE or GMAT scores. If you are planning to apply for both MEM and MBA, then doing GMAT will be better as  for MBA courses, colleges accept only GMAT scores. Or if you want to go for technical courses, then taking GRE will be better.

Career Options:

Master of Engineering Management offers many specializations and after completing the course, students get many choices to work with.

After completing the course, students can get relevant positions in sectors: automotive, aerospace, chemicals, communications, industrial goods, energy, electronics, food and drink, manufacturing, mining, oil and gas, process analysis, research and development, product development, transportation, and waste disposal. After MEM, students can get placed in a job with salary from $78,000 to $110,000.

Common career options are:

i)                    Research and Technical Development

Research and development is necessary for a business to grow. After MEM, with your acquired knowledge, you will be working on developing new products or improvising existing products. Usually, students get a chance to work in diverse fields like power systems, nanotechnology, bioengineering, high-speed computation etc.

ii)                  Engineering Management Consultancy

When engineering companies require the expertise of an engineering manager on occasions, they hire engineering management consultants. MEM gives an opportunity to become an Engineering Management Consultant who can provide guidance on the optimization, implementation, improvement, strategic development, analysis and evaluation of systems within engineering. A consultant needs to take into account other factors like people, finances, equipment, energy, material, processes at the same time to ensure that engineering organization becomes more effective, efficient, profitable and organized with his or her advice. They need to carefully analyse existing processes, products and systems within the organization. For this, an engineering manager will need to use background knowledge, best practices, computer simulation and modelling along with mathematical tools.

What are the responsibilities of an Engineering Manager?

An engineering manager will be working with teams in order to bring a product from scratch to market delivery. Also, he/she will need to utilize analytical and quantitative skills to solve problems and make well-informed decisions. He or she will need to have an understanding of the technical and behavioural aspects of decision making. Also, will be responsible for a productive work environment which can facilitate innovation and technological breakthroughs.
